Surgical Observation of Thyroid Diseases Analysis of 227 Caonsecutive Cases

Abstract
227 consecutive cases of thyroid diseases surgically treated at the 3rd A.H. 121 E.H. and 11 E.H. between Jan. 1959, to Oct. 1966 were analysed. Analyzed thyroid diseases included 10 cases of thyroglossal duct cyst (4.45%), 1 case of tuberculosis, 4 cases of Hashimotoe¢¥s struma (1.8%), 2 cases of chronic thyroditis, 52 cases of toxic diffuse goiter (22.99 ), 46 cases of nodular (adenomatous) goiter (20.3,%), 21 cases of simple colloid goiter (9.3 % ), 61 cases of adenoma (26 %), 28 cases of carcinoma (12.3), 1 case of lymphosarcoma, and 1 case of metastatic carcinoma.
Sex incidence of thyroid diseases was generally higher in females, but thyroglossal dust cyst and carcinoma of thyroid were higher in males.
The average age (and range of ages) of patients in each type of thyroid diseases was 12 years(6-21 years) in thyroglossal dust cyst, 40 years (40 years) in tuderculosis, 35 years (31-43 years) in Hashimotoe¢¥s struma, 35 years (23-47 years) in chronic thyroiditis, 35 years (16-57 years) in toxic diffuse goiter, 30 years (20-43 years) in nodular (adenomatous) goiter, 32 years (24-50 years) in simple colloid goiter, 29 years (5-69 years) in adenoma, 36 years (22-59 years) in carcinoma, and 56 years in lymphosarcoma respectively.
The postoperative complications of thyroid diseases in our study are as follows. Tetany, 13 cases; transient unilateral recurrent nerve paralysis, 6 cases; transient birateral recurrent nerve paralysis, 3 cases; permanent recurrent nerve paralysis, 5 cases; myxedema, 5 cases; wound infection, 6 cases; postoperative bleeding, 3 cases.
The incidence of thyroid diseases and postoperative complications were discussed in this paper.
